The 3-Bag Capsule: How Many Bags You Actually Need

Leah Mickschl ·Founder, Pretty Simple · ·6 min read

Somewhere between "one bag for everything" and a closet shelf sagging under twelve of them, there's a smarter number, and for most women, it's three. Not three random impulse buys, three bags chosen on purpose, each with a specific job, so you're never standing in front of your closet wondering what to grab.

Why Three Is the Number That Actually Works

One bag can't do everything well. A bag built for grocery runs and school pickup is rarely the same bag you want at dinner, and a delicate evening bag is the wrong choice for a Tuesday with a diaper bag's worth of stuff to carry. Three bags, each built for a distinct job, covers nearly every day without the overwhelm of a bag for every possible outfit.

Sienna Slouchy Woven Shoulder Bag

Bag One: The Everyday Workhorse

This is the bag that handles ninety percent of your life, errands, school runs, the office, the gym bag drop-off. It needs real capacity, a durable material that can take a scuff, and hands-free wear so you're not constantly adjusting a strap while carrying everything else.

The Workhorse

Westlyn Woven Bum Bag

Our top-selling crossbody, available in 32+ colors. Fits phone, wallet, sunglasses, and keys without bulk.

Shop Westlyn, $72

Bag Two: The Polished Crossbody

This is the bag for the version of your day that needs a little more polish, a dinner, a meeting that runs into happy hour, date night. Smaller, smoother, and a little more refined than your workhorse, it should hold only the essentials: phone, cards, keys, lipstick.

Look for a smooth or lightly pebbled finish here rather than a heavily textured one, it reads more elevated next to a blazer or a dress.

The Completer

Woven Willow Camera Crossbody Bag

Vegan leather with a fun block-design strap, gold hardware, and a zip top that keeps things secure without sacrificing polish. Small enough for the essentials, refined enough for dinner.

Shop Woven WIllow, $76

Bag Three: The Weekend Tote

The third bag exists for the days your workhorse is too small, weekend trips, a beach day, hauling groceries plus a stray soccer bag. A structured tote with a flat bottom and sturdy handles earns its spot for exactly these moments, and doubles easily as a travel bag when needed.

The Weekender

Tenley Quilted Tote Roller Bag

Quilted structure and real capacity for the days your everyday bag isn't quite enough, from grocery runs to weekend trips

Shop Tenley, $138

How to Build Yours Without Overspending

You don't need to buy all three at once, and you don't need them to match perfectly. Start with whichever job is missing from your current rotation, most people already have an "everyday" bag and are missing the other two. Choose neutral tones for at least one of the three so it can move between outfits without a second thought.

  • Start with the gap, not the bag you like best in photos
  • Keep at least one neutral so it pairs with everything else you own
  • Let materials differ by job, wipeable for the workhorse, refined for the crossbody, sturdy for the tote
  • Resist a fourth bag until one of the three actually wears out

Three bags, each doing its job well, will get more actual use than a closet full of ones that only almost fit the moment.
